So often when I speak to my clients, they complain about the performance of their staff members. The doctors may tell them at the moment, something they have done wrong, but the employee really does not “get” it. Doctors also do not always take the time to tell employees all the things that they have done right – that is just expected.
It is of the utmost importance to have a sit down, across the desk, talk at least every few months, not just once a year for an “annual review.”
The employee needs to hear directly from the doctor all the things that they are doing right and how they have improved to that level. The employee also needs to hear that the doctor believes that they can continue to improve. The doctor needs to ask specific things of the employee and set up a time in a few weeks to review how they are doing with that improvement.
Do not settle with “good enough”. You will be amazed how your positive attitude will spill over onto the employee and empower them to do much better!
(P.S. If the employee does not improve over time, with several meetings with her, know that your practice can only grow and prosper with professional level staff, and it may be time to say goodbye…)
